Women & Politics: Environmentalism and Local Activism

Today’s guest is Katherine Jordan, City Council Member, 2nd District

  • One of my first roles in the district was as Chair of Fox Elementary School PTA’s Parks & Grounds Committee. I successfully fought for repairs to our broken playground and wrote grants for new trees and custodial equipment. I consistently advocate for RPS funding and remain active as a former RPS parent in Support Our Schools and StayRVA.
  • I also served as Fan District Association (FDA) President,  Grants Co-Chair, and  Parks & Trees Chair. In these roles, I helped neighbors with general city services like trash, lighting, flooding & sidewalks as well as zoning and other issues. I also successfully advocated for increasing proceeds from our Holiday House Tour fundraiser to our public schools (Fox, Binford and TJ).
  • Outside of the 2nd, I served 4 years as a member of Richmond’s Green City Commission.  I’m proud to have spearheaded the NetZero 2050 Resolution which was adopted June 8 by City Council, as well as helping introduce sustainability goals into city contracts and master plans.  I’ve loved meeting with neighbors from Carver to Scott’s Addition to hear their sustainability initiatives. Together we can build a more resilient and equitable city. To become involved, visit the just launched: www.RVAGreen2050.com
  • At the state and national level, I was honored to be part of the VAratifyERA leadership team.  After three years of advocacy and organizing, our General Assembly finally ratified the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in a bipartisan vote.  Equality in all forms should be the rule.
